[Rose is reclining on a couch in a coffee shop, looking up and to the left, bored]
Rose: So anyway, the only difference is his kids all have four fingers, while the other Na'vi only have three.
Rose: I'm not, like, an Avatar geneticist. But I'd expect a Human-Na'Vi hybrid to be, I don't know, shorter? Less blue?

[Camera pans out to show Aya sitting next to Rose on the couch, looking at her hand.]
Aya: Ok, sure, but...
Aya: Why four fingers?
Rose: Uh, because that's the standard number of fingers for a person to have?

[Aya, skeptical, holding up three fingers and a thumb with her right hand]
Aya: FOUR fingers?

Rose (laughing, holding up her hand): No! Four fingers and a thumb.
Aya (dour): A thumb IS a finger.

Rose: I guess? But you wouldn't say that like, MICKEY MOUSE has four fingers.
Rose: He's got three fingers. The thumb is just assumed.
Aya: Why would we assume that?
Aya: Some people don't have THUMBS!

Yes, we're still talking about a movie that came out in 2022. Rose just picked up her hold from the library!

    Being born without a thumb makes you less of a freak than those people who don’t consider a thumb to be a finger.
    The ‘people’ Aya is thinking of are the Elite from Halo. 4 fingers and no thumb. Or more like 2 fingers and 2 thumbs maybe.
    Hot Damn, the reddit post had the super ancient post I was thinking of from the last strip.

    I was run over by a van. I lost the tip of my right thumb. In the hospital I was having a discussion with a nurse while waiting for an X-ray.
    Thumbs aren’t fingers. Fingers have three joints. thumbs only have two.

      That’s definitely a compelling case for Rose’s (my) side of the argument!

    You contend that fingers can only have 3 joints and not 2 as if it is a divine truth. But the number of joints doesn’t really matter. Its like saying that chicken ain’t birds because they can’t fly. Or spider monkeys don’t have hands because they only have 4 fingers. Or birds don’t have neck since they have more neck bones.

    Nobody would consider the ‘big toe’ to not be a toe because it has one fewer joint than the other toes.
